Assessment and Diagnosis

Diagnosing and treating brain injuries can be difficult as sometimes the symptoms and  deficits are not immediately clear. In others, though, the cause of the problem is  obvious, such as when a person develops cognitive issues following an accident or  stroke. In either case, competent and specialized treatment team gives the best  potential for positive gains and a good outcome.

A brain injury physician may recommend cognitive testing, brain imaging scans, or even  bloodwork in their search for a thorough diagnosis. Others on the clinical treatment  team may carry out ongoing evaluations, such as neurocognitive tests.

Progress may be measured by both the clinical team or the individual based on how  well they are able to function within their community. Factors might include their ability  to return to work, hobbies as well as their ability to communicate and operate  independently.
